Summer is here now. June is almost over and we are moving into July. The temperatures have risen and our busy time in the garden slows. Now we move from planting and mulching, to watering, and weeding.

This picture above is beebalm. This is a plant that we are carrying in our store. It is in the mint family so if you plant it in your garden be sure to not plant it near a mint. All mint varieties need to keep their roots from mingling. Otherwise they will revert back to the common mint form. You can keep mints under control by planting them in a container and sinking the container into the ground. This will keep them confined to only the area of the container. This also keeps the roots from mingling with other plants.

Be sure that your garden and lawn gets at least 1 to 2 inches of water each week. It is better to water for longer periods of time but less times each week. This encourages the roots to go deep into the ground rather than spreading out.

We spray spray around the edge of our beds with a grass and brush killer by ferti-lome. This helps to keep the bermuda grass out of our beds. It also helps to cut down our work by eliminating some of our weed eating. We carry a full line of ferti-lome products in our store.

We like to use rocks to edge our beds. This gives them a natural rustic feel. We also sell rocks in our store.

Even when the temperatures reach into the century mark and beyond like this week, our beds continue to bloom with color and vibrancy. We use plants that flourish even in high heat like salvias and iceplant which we sell in our greenhouse.

We had a couple of storms with some very high winds that knocked our fence around a bit so we have a bit of work to do to repair this. Thankfully it is an easy fix. Remember that June is when you put pre emergent down to prevent summer weeds. June is almost over so hurry. We hope you are having a great gardening season.

The West Beds in Full Bloom

We are still very busy here at Feed and Seed Barn. We have many projects that we are working on that we are taking pictures of to share with you. This is a picture of a red hardy hibiscus that we sell in the shop for $7.00 in a 1 gallon pot.

We have finally got our display beds planted and in full bloom. In the picture below the blue groundcover you see is a type of plumbago. We sell it also in 1 gallon pots. We have a simple pricing system. All 1 gallon pots are $7.00 and our 4 inch pots are $1.20 except herbs which are $1.90 We stock a large range of perennials as well as annuals. We would be glad to ship anything out in the united States if you see something you are longing for.

We sell all of the flowers and plants that we use in our display beds. So if you see anything you are curious about we would be very happy to tell you about the plant and or sell it to you. We sell seed also and this year we planted indian corn in our display beds.

These beds on the West side are very hot, sunny and can be dry so we plant things that will hold up to those kinds of conditions in these beds. We use lots of salvias in these beds.

We like to use old farm equipment as decorative items in our beds. The barrels make great planters and we can order them whole, cut in half and cut in half length ways.

We use a cedar mulch in all of our beds. It helps to keep bugs at bay, it helps to keep the moisture level and it keeps the roots of the plants cooler in summer and warmer in winter. It also breaks down and adds nutrients to the soil. We keep cedar mulch in stock.

We also try to stock rocks and other materials that can be used as edging materials around a flower bed.

It is amazing how such common things like rocks and old rusty farm equipment can make such beautiful beds

These are Mexican Petunias which we also stock in 1 gallon containers. They are very hardy here in Seymour. We are zone 7/8 and so we have many choices that we can grow.

I hope you enjoyed this little tour of some of our beds. Come back soon, we have more beds to show you.

More Containers

We have been busy here at Feed and Seed Barn. Springtime is one of our busiest times. We have been creating lots of container plantings to stock in our store. We like to create a variety of containers with many different looks. We stock container plantings for shady spots as well as sunny spots. When planting a container be sure that you put plants with similar light needs and similar watering needs in the same container. We also stock everything you need for creating your own containers. We always add a scoop of Osmocote to all our containers. It is a great fertilizer that feeds your plants for 4 months. We like it because our plants really seem to thrive and grow very full and beautiful with lots of blooms when we use Osmocote.

We like to overstuff our containers so that when the plants get to full size it looks full and lush. In some of our containers we add tall plants in the center or to the back of the container with shorter fuller plants around the taller ones and we like to add something trailing in the front.
